Day 1: Drive from Padum till the Road’s end at Anmo and from there, trek to Cha in 2-3 hours
The day begins quite lazily as we drive on the road till we come to the end of the road. From here onwards, it’s all walking to our campsite in Cha. If we start early, we can also visit several Gompas that dot our trail like the Gompa at Bardan and Mune. Our trail follows a river as the path snakes higher and higher through villages and isolated houses till we reach Cha at an altitude of 3900m. In this village there are numerous homestays where we can stay for the night or set up our own tents.
Day 2: Trek from Cha to Tangtse in 6-7 hours
We start quite early after breakfast, down the narrow bridge which crosses the river and start our trail up the path. This trail leads us through several villages like Yal, Testa and Kuru to name a few. The walk is quite easy even though the duration is longer. We will reach Tangste in about 6-7 hours where crossing a bridge welcomes us into the village of Tangste. Situated at 400m above sea level, the village has very few houses and lots of fields all around. There is also a Gompa situated above the village which we can visit depending on the time and the energy left.
Day 3: Trek Tangste to Zinchen in 4 hours
As yesterday, we follow the same river for about 1-1.5 hours till we reach a small village called Thabley which has just two houses. From here onwards, the path leads into a gorge which takes you up the mountain side. The Gorge opens up into a path quite high up over ridges and from there it leads you to the river Zinchen located at 4600m. We can camp here for the night as this place has enough space for 5-6 tents.
Day 4: Trek from Zinchen to Churmik Marpo via the Phitse-La pass in 8-9 hours.
In order to finish this trek successfully, it is required that we start quite early as it takes a lot of time to reach our camp site at Churmik Marpo. As usual we have the river to keep us company till we reach a place at an altitude of 5175m sitauated at the bottom of the pass. We rest here for a few minutes and push off to conquer the Phirtse-La pass at an altitude of 5582m. The climb would be slow owing to the steep terrain and treacherous paths. However, the climb is justified by the view on top of the pass where you can see the beautiful valley all around. From here, we start our trek down into our camp at Churmik Marpo which is at an altitude of 4750m.
Day 5: Trek from Churmik Marpo to Umlung in 5-6 hours
The river is our guide today also as we follow it into a small gorge. En-route we can see many Marmot holes but rarely any marmots. After crossing the river into the gorge, we continue on till the river joins another bigger river Lingti, at Kham Kherab. Kham Kherab is at an altitude of 4470m and the trail flattens from here onwards till we reach Umlung at 4440m.
Day 6: Trek from Umlung to Sarchu in 4 hours
The last day of the trek is rather a short one which could be completed in under 4 hours. The river Lingti keeps us company till we reach Sarchu. Just before Sarchu, the river Lingti flows into the river Tsarap which needs to be crossed before we can reach the village of Sarchu which is at an altitude of 4300m. Sarchu has lost of Dhabas selling hot and tasty food as well as various options for the night. However for those who want to continue onto Leh, the road leads all the way there.
