One of the best treks you could come across in the Himalayan region would be the trek from Lamayuru to Padum. This trek is not for the faint-hearted trekkers among you. This long-distance trek would take you across the rugged terrains of the Zanskar range. Though the beginning of the trek is not exhausting due to the well-built roads, the terrain soon gives way to unforgiving landscapes, narrow pathways and remote regions where nature reigns at her best. The trek takes you through ancient cultures of the Zanskari people and their traditions before taking you through ancient monasteries and gompas which gives way to divine forests untouched by man. This 15-day trek is for those avid trekkers who are always looking for new adventures to write in their story books.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN LEH
We recommend you take a proper day’s rest in Leh on your arrival. You can roam around and enjoy the beautiful landscape In Leh. However, make sure not to tire your body and try to acclimatize as much as possible with the atmosphere in Leh. Make sure to check in to your hotel room before nighfall and have a good night’s rest for an adventure than begins the next day.
DAY 2: LEH TO LAMAYURU
We begin early in the day after breakfast, driving down from Leh to Lamayuru. The total distance is approx. 115km which we will cover in approx. 4 hours. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes, alpine tress and monasteries as we gain nearly 370 feet in altitude.
DAY 3: LAMAYURU TO WANLA
The first day of actual trek starts today. After breakfast we start our trek through the narrow dusty roads, winding our way across the mountain slopes till we reach the pass at an altitude of 12,345 feet. Thereafter we start our slow descent into the Wanla village at an altitude of 10,322 feet. The total journey covers 9km and takes 5 hours to complete. Thereafter we retire to our tents for the night after dinner.
DAY 4: WANLA TO HANUPATTA
The trek today is not as tiring as yesterday. However, the climb is quite treacherous as we start our ascent into the mountain side gaining around 1867 feet in altitude. The total distance from wanla to hanupatta is around 8 kn which we would cover in approx. 5 hours. The night would be spend under the stars in tents.
DAY 5: HANUPATTA TO PHOTOSKAR
Today we continue our ascent along the steep mountain slopes. The lack of sufficient quantity of oxygen in the air may tire our body but not our spirits as we climb up till Sirsir La at an altitude of 15,584 feet. Thereafter we climb down to finally reach 3,531 feet at our final destination for the day, Photoskar. The night would be spent in tents in mother natures lap.
DAY 6: TREK FROM PHOTOSKAR TO FOOT OF SENGGE LA
The trek from Photoskar to the Foot of Sengge La would take approx. 8 hours to cover almost 19km. The climb takes you up till 16,434 feet at the pass before finally descending down to 14,771 feet at the Foot of Sengge La.
DAY 7: FOOT OF SENGGE LA TO LINGSHED
Today is another day of hard trek as we start our climb down the mountain slopes via Kiupa La to reach Lingshed at an altitude of 12,737 feet. The total distance of 12 km would be covered in 7 hours before we rest our tired bodies in tents for the night.
DAY 8: REST AND ACCLIMATISATION AT LINGSHED
Who wouldn’t like a days rest after all the hard trekking of the past week. Today we give proper rest to our tired bodies, regaining the lost energy and spirits. The day should be spent resting at the many homestays or tents, allowing our body to acclimatize further with the high altitude atmosphere.
DAY 9: LINGSHED TO SNERTSE
After a full day’s rest, today we begin our climb further up the mountain slopes. The day starts with a hard climb before descending down to Snertse. The routing takes us via Hanuma La Pass at an altitude of 15,500 feet before reaching Snertse at an altitude of 12,297 feet. The total distance of 18km can be covered in 9 hours. Stay for the night would be in tents.
DAY 10: SNERTSE TO HANUMIL
Today’s initial part of the trek would take us up the mountain slope before finally sloping down into Hanumil. The distance between Snertse to Hanumil is approx. 12 km and takes 6 hours to complete.
DAY 11: HANUMIL TO PISHU
The trek today will not be as tough as yesterday as we cover 15km in 5 hours to reach our destination for the day, Pishu. After dinner at Pishu we will retire to our tents for the night.
DAY 12: PISHU TO KARSHA
17Km in 5 hours. That would be our aim for today as we start our trek into Karsha. Karsha is situated at an altitude of 12,015 feet and is very scenic place to rest for the night. As usual we will retire to our tents after dinner.
DAY 13: KARSHA TO PADUM
Today would be the last day of walking as we trek into the Padum Valley. Covering 11km in 4 hours we reach Padum by lunch time if we start early. Take the rest of the day, resting and enjoying the beautiful nature.
DAY 14: PADUM TO KARGIL
After 13 days of trek today we drive down to Kargil. We start descending down to reach an altitude of 8,780 feet at Kargil. The total distance of 232 km is covered in 8 hours. Once we reach Kargil, we can settle into some decent hotel with hot running water and mouthwatering food before dwelling into the realm of dreams.
DAY 15: KARGIL TO LEH
Our trek finally comes to an end today. 15 days of adventure to last a lifetime, starts with the drive down to Leh. 6 hours and 220 km later, we can check into another good hotel for the night. Memories and good friendship is what we have gained in these 15 days, good enough to last a lifetime.
