The Chamser Kangri Expedition is one of the most rewarding mountaineering adventures in the Indian Himalayas, offering climbers the opportunity to ascend one of the highest and most beautiful peaks in the remote Rupshu Valley of Eastern Ladakh. Rising to 6,622 metres (21,726 ft), Chamser Kangri towers above the crystal-clear waters of Tso Moriri Lake, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Along with its neighbouring summit, Lungser Kangri (6,666 m), it forms an outstanding twin-peak expedition in the heart of the Changthang Plateau.
Chamser Kangri is regarded as a moderately technical mountaineering objective. Although the climbing route is not highly technical, the extreme altitude presents a serious challenge. Climbers should be physically fit and have previous high-altitude trekking or basic mountaineering experience.
The summit of Chamser Kangri rewards climbers with breathtaking 360-degree views of Tso Moriri Lake, Kiyung Tso, Riyul Tso, Mentok Kangri, Gia Kangri, Chalung Kangri, Lungser Kangri, and the vast Changthang Plateaustretching towards the Tibetan frontier. For climbers looking to experience a true Himalayan expedition before progressing to higher 7,000-metre peaks, Chamser Kangri offers the perfect combination of adventure, challenge, and unforgettable mountain scenery.

Key details for this adventure
On arrival at Leh Airport, you will be welcomed by the Altitude Adventure team and transferred to your hotel. As Leh is located at 3,500 metres, the day is reserved for complete rest and acclimatisation. Relax, stay well hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity. During the evening, the expedition leader will conduct a comprehensive briefing covering the itinerary, safety procedures, equipment check, weather conditions, and expedition logistics.
Today is dedicated to acclimatisation. Visit the famous Thiksey Monastery, Shey Palace, Shanti Stupa, and explore the vibrant Leh Market. These visits help your body adjust to the altitude while introducing you to Ladakh's rich Buddhist culture. In the evening, the climbing team will carry out a final inspection of all personal and technical climbing equipment.
Leave Leh after breakfast and drive through Upshi, Chumathang Hot Springs, Mahe Bridge, and the spectacular landscapes of the Changthang Plateau before reaching Skercho, the starting point of the expedition. The route passes remote nomadic settlements, grazing yaks and pashmina goats, colourful mountains, and wide open valleys that showcase the unique beauty of Eastern Ladakh.
The expedition officially begins with a gradual trek from Skercho to Chamser Kangri Base Camp. The trail follows glacial streams, alpine meadows, and moraine ridges while offering magnificent views of Chamser Kangri, Lungser Kangri, and the shimmering waters of Tso Moriri Lake. On reaching Base Camp, relax while the expedition staff prepares comfortable camping facilities.
Today's programme follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle. Take a short acclimatisation hike above Base Camp before descending for rest. During the afternoon, our climbing guides conduct practical training on glacier travel, crampon walking, ice axe techniques, rope management, and basic mountaineering safety.
Carry essential climbing equipment and move to Advanced Base Camp. The route crosses rocky moraine and glacier terrain, providing spectacular close-up views of Chamser Kangri. After reaching camp, organise climbing equipment and prepare for the summit phase of the chamber Kangri expedition.
Spend the day acclimatising and practising essential climbing techniques on nearby snow slopes. Under the guidance of the expedition leader, refresh your skills in crampon walking, ice axe use, fixed rope techniques, and safe movement on snow and glacier terrain before returning to camp.
Start before midnight for the summit attempt. Climb steadily across frozen snowfields and glaciated terrain before reaching the summit ridge. Standing on the summit of Chamser Kangri is a truly unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views of Tso Moriri, Mentok Kangri, Lungser Kangri, Gia Kangri, Chalung Kangri, Kiyung Tso, Riyul Tso, and the endless Changthang Plateau. After celebrating your achievement, descend carefully to Advanced Base Camp.
A reserve day is included in the itinerary to allow flexibility in case of bad weather or unfavourable climbing conditions. If the summit has already been achieved, the day can be used for rest, photography, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the high camp.
After breakfast, descend from Advanced Base Camp to Skercho, where the vehicles will be waiting. Drive back through the magnificent Changthang Plateau, passing Chumathang Hot Springs, Mahe Bridge, and Upshi before reaching Leh in the evening. Celebrate the successful completion of your Chamser Kangri Expedition with the team.
After breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport for your onward flight, carrying unforgettable memories of climbing one of Ladakh's most spectacular Himalayan peaks.

Trip Note :
The Chamser Kangri Expedition (6,622 meters) takes place in the remote and high-altitude region of Eastern Ladakh, near the Changthang Plateau and the Indo-Tibet border. This isolated mountain environment is characterized by extreme weather, vast high-altitude terrain, and limited infrastructure, where conditions can change rapidly without prior notice. Although the expedition is scheduled during the most favorable climbing window, travel to and from Leh remains highly weather-dependent, and flight delays or cancellations are common due to operational or environmental factors.
In case of any unforeseen disruptions such as flight delays, road blockages, or itinerary changes beyond our control, any additional expenses—including accommodation, meals, transportation, or personal costs—will be borne by the participant. Our team will provide full on-ground support and assistance to help manage such situations and make alternate arrangements wherever possible.
Mountain environments in Ladakh are inherently unpredictable. Factors such as rapidly changing weather patterns, wind conditions, snow quality, and altitude-related challenges may require necessary modifications to the planned itinerary. This may include adjustments to acclimatisation schedules, load ferry movements, camp placements, summit attempts, or climbing routes. All decisions made by the expedition leader and guides regarding safety, route planning, and expedition management are final and must be strictly followed by all participants.
Although Chamser Kangri is considered a non-technical or semi-technical 6,000-meter peak, it still demands serious high-altitude endurance. The expedition involves long glacier approaches, snow slopes, and prolonged exposure to extreme altitude and cold conditions. Climbing above 6,000 meters significantly increases physical and mental demands, and therefore, summit success cannot be guaranteed. Weather conditions, team fitness, and safety considerations will always take priority over summit attempts.
Participants must be physically fit, mentally prepared, and capable of sustained effort in a high-altitude environment. Prior trekking experience at altitude is highly recommended. Proper acclimatisation protocols are strictly followed throughout the expedition to minimize risks associated with altitude sickness; however, individual responses to altitude can vary.
We strongly recommend that all participants maintain flexible travel plans, including buffer days before and after the expedition. It is mandatory to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking or climbing, emergency evacuation (including helicopter rescue), medical treatment, and trip interruptions.
Altitude Adventure is committed to delivering a safe, well-organised, and professionally guided mountaineering experience. With our experienced local team, structured acclimatisation plan, and strong logistical support, we ensure that every participant has the best possible opportunity for a safe and rewarding climb of Chamser Kangri.
Chamser Kangri (6,622 m) is located in the remote Rupshu Valley of the Changthang region in Eastern Ladakh, India. The peak rises above the eastern shore of the beautiful Tso Moriri Lake and is one of the highest mountaineering objectives in Ladakh.
Chamser Kangri stands at 6,622 metres (21,726 ft) above sea level, making it one of the highest expedition peaks in Ladakh.
Chamser Kangri is considered a moderately technical mountaineering expedition. Climbers should be comfortable using crampons, an ice axe, harness, and rope on snow and glacier terrain. The main challenge is the high altitude rather than highly technical climbing.
The expedition is recommended for experienced trekkers and mountaineers who have previously trekked above 5,000 metres or completed a basic mountaineering course. Good physical fitness and endurance are essential.
Complete beginners without any high-altitude trekking or mountaineering experience are not advised to attempt Chamser Kangri. Prior experience on snow and at high altitude will greatly improve safety and summit success.
The best season is from mid-June to mid-September, when weather conditions are generally stable and the mountain is most suitable for climbing.
The standard expedition takes 11 days, including acclimatisation in Leh, trekking to Base Camp, summit attempt, a reserve day, and return to Leh.
Since the summit is above 6,600 metres, proper acclimatisation helps your body adapt to lower oxygen levels, reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), and significantly increases your chances of a successful summit.
Yes. Previous experience with glacier walking, snow climbing, or basic mountaineering is highly recommended. Knowledge of using crampons, an ice axe, and a climbing harness is an advantage.
Essential equipment includes:
Mountaineering boots
Crampons
Ice axe
Climbing harness
Helmet
Carabiners
Ascender and descender
Down jacket
Down sleeping bag

Yes. Since Lungser Kangri (6,666 m) is located close to Chamser Kangri, many climbers choose a combined expedition to attempt both peaks during the same journey.
The expedition requires:
Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) climbing permit
Inner Line Permit (ILP) for restricted areas
Forest and local administration permissions where applicable
Altitude Adventure arranges all necessary expedition permits.
The expedition starts from Leh, the capital of Ladakh. After two days of acclimatisation, participants drive to Skercho before trekking to Base Camp.
Accommodation includes:
Comfortable hotel stay in Leh
Fully serviced camping at Skercho
Expedition Base Camp
Advanced Base Camp with sleeping tents, dining tent, and kitchen tent
The Changthang region is home to a variety of rare Himalayan wildlife, including:
Kiang (Tibetan Wild Ass)
Blue Sheep (Bharal)
Himalayan Marmot
Pallas's Cat
Tibetan Sand Fox
Tibetan Gazelle
Tibetan Wolf
Black-necked Crane
Golden Eagle
The summit day is the most demanding part of the expedition. Climbers generally spend 8–10 hours ascending and descending over glacier and snow terrain, requiring excellent stamina and determination.
Summit success depends on weather, snow conditions, team fitness, and acclimatisation. Following the planned itinerary and the guidance of experienced climbing leaders greatly improves the chances of reaching the summit safely.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude mountaineering, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue (where available) is strongly recommended and may be mandatory for international participants.
Participants should have excellent cardiovascular fitness and endurance. It is recommended to prepare for at least 3–4 months with hiking, running, cycling, stair climbing, and strength training before the expedition.
Altitude Adventure offers professionally organised expeditions led by experienced local climbing guides. We provide carefully planned acclimatisation schedules, quality camping equipment, nutritious meals, experienced support staff, reliable logistics, and a strong commitment to safety, ensuring every climber enjoys a safe and memorable Himalayan expedition.
