The Shang to Rumbak Trek, widely recognized as one of the premier Snow Leopard Trails in Hemis National Park, Ladakh, is a moderate, highly immersive high-altitude adventure that leads you straight into the core habitat of the elusive Snow Leopard (locally revered as the Grey Ghost of the Mountains). Hemis National Park is globally celebrated as one of the best places on Earth to track and observe Snow Leopards in their natural environment, and the Shang to Rumbak route stands out for its excellent accessibility, stunning landscapes, and consistent wildlife activity. This famous trail follows ancient herder paths and high passes through remote valleys that serve as prime hunting grounds for Snow Leopards, especially around the Rumbak Valley, Gangpoche meadows, and the slopes below Stok Kangri and Matho Kangri.
Unlike longer or more remote Snow Leopard expeditions, the Shang to Rumbak Snow Leopard Trail offers a perfect balance for trekkers who want a manageable yet deeply rewarding experience. Over 8 days (including proper acclimatization in Leh), you cross three spectacular passes near 5,000 metres Shang La, Matho La, and Stok La while walking through rolling grasslands, narrow gorges, and high meadows where Snow Leopards frequently descend to hunt Bharal (Blue Sheep). The park’s rugged cliffs, abundant prey base, and relatively good trail network make this one of the most popular Snow Leopard trails in Ladakh for both summer trekkers (who often find fresh pugmarks and scat) and winter visitors (who have higher chances of actual sightings).

Trip Note :
The Shang to Rumbak Trek takes place in the remote and high-altitude wilderness of Hemis National Park, Ladakh, a region known for its rugged terrain, extreme weather conditions, and pristine natural environment. This trail passes through the core habitat of the elusive Snow Leopard (Grey Ghost), where weather, trail conditions, and wildlife movement can change rapidly.
While we carefully design this itinerary for a safe and immersive experience, operating in such a remote mountain environment requires a degree of flexibility. Changes in weather, trail conditions, or logistical factors may lead to adjustments in the daily schedule, campsites, or route without prior notice, always keeping safety as the top priority.
Travel to and from Leh is highly dependent on weather conditions. Flight delays, cancellations, or road disruptions are not uncommon in Ladakh, and any additional expenses arising due to such unforeseen circumstances will need to be borne by the participants.
This trek involves crossing high mountain passes close to 5,000 metres, and participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for sustained trekking at altitude. Proper acclimatisation in Leh is mandatory, and all trekkers are strongly advised to follow acclimatisation guidelines to reduce the risk of altitude-related illnesses such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Wildlife sightings, including the Snow Leopard, depend entirely on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed. However, the region offers excellent opportunities to observe high-altitude wildlife such as Bharal (Blue Sheep), marmots, and golden eagles, along with occasional signs of the Snow Leopard.
Participants are expected to maintain a respectful attitude towards the fragile ecosystem and local communities, following Leave No Trace principles throughout the journey.
Despite the challenges, the Shang to Rumbak Trek is a deeply rewarding experience, offering a rare chance to explore one of the most iconic landscapes in Ladakh and walk through one of the world’s most famous Snow Leopard habitats.
