Welcome to the Ladakh Winter Ice Climbing Course with Altitude Adventure.
Winter in Ladakh is very cold, but this is also the best time to see the mountains in a completely different way. During winter, waterfalls and mountain streams freeze and become natural walls of ice. These frozen waterfalls give us a good place to learn and practise ice climbing in real Himalayan conditions.
Ice climbing is an important skill for alpine and mountaineering. It is also a very exciting adventure by itself. This course is designed for both beginners who want to learn ice climbing and alpine climbers who want to improve their skills before bigger Himalayan climbs.
During this 8-day course, we spend 5 full days in the field learning practical ice-climbing techniques. The main focus is on movement on ice using crampons and ice tools, starting from easy low-angle ice and slowly moving towards steeper ice as your confidence and technique improve.
Our instructors keep the groups small, with approximately 1 instructor for every 3 participants. This gives good supervision and enough time for every climber to practise.
The course is conducted around Leh, Ladakh, at suitable natural ice-climbing sites. The exact climbing location can change according to ice conditions, weather, safety and the progress of the participants.

Trip Note :
The Ladakh Winter Ice Climbing Course takes place around Leh during peak winter, when frozen waterfalls become natural ice walls. Temperatures at the climbing areas can drop to -15°C or lower, with cold winds and quickly changing weather.
Natural ice conditions vary with temperature and sunlight. The exact climbing site, daily schedule and training plan may be adjusted without prior notice based on ice quality, weather, road access and group progress, always keeping safety first.
Winter flights to and from Leh are often delayed or cancelled due to weather. Any extra expenses caused by such disruptions must be borne by participants, so we recommend keeping a buffer day in your travel plans.
Leh sits at around 3,500 m, and some training sites may be higher. Proper acclimatisation is mandatory, and Day 1 is kept for rest to reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
No previous ice-climbing experience is required, but participants must be physically fit and comfortable with long days outdoors in extreme cold. All gear is checked on Day 2, and missing items can be arranged in Leh.
Participants are expected to follow instructor guidance at all times, respect local communities and follow Leave No Trace principles. Despite the cold, this course offers a rare chance to learn real ice-climbing skills in the Himalayan winter.
